The Arresting Genitals…Magun or Penis Captivus? (Another Sticky Situation)

imageOne nice summer afternoon, I was busy minding other people’s business on Facebook, when a news story strolled passed my page. A married Italian woman and her lover got ‘stuck’ to each other while having sex in the Mediterranean Sea (Oh Dear!). The man literally couldn’t remove his penis from the woman’s vagina. A search on the internet for further details, revealed that there were other cases of couples ‘sticking’ to each other whilst having sex. In 2012, it took “prayers” for a cheating wife and her lover to be disentangled in Kenya. The lover even paid the aggrieved husband 20,000 Kenyan shillings as compensation. In 2009, a couple from the Philippines were stuck to each other for 17 hours. The man was given a tranquilliser before he could disunite from his lover. In all the cases, common themes were ‘Penis Captivus’, ‘Spells’ and ‘Infidelity’. My initial thought was “Magun! So the spell transcends to all cultures”.

Magun in Yoruba culture of Nigeria, means “do not climb”. It is believed to be a spell cast by husbands on wives who are suspected of adultery. Usually obtained from native doctors, they are put on door entrances for the women to step over. They are quickly removed soon after, because it is believed that if the women crossed them again; the potency of the spell would be ruined. My initial knowledge of ‘magun’ stem from reading “Lolly” (the sexual comic of my youth). Dauda The Sexy Guy (one of the characters) got ‘stuck’ to a married woman whilst having sex with her. A native doctor had to perform rituals to ‘release’ them from the curse of magun. Subsequently, anecdotal accounts from friends built my knowledge on the mystery of magun.

Now, the science bit…

Penis Captivus (captive penis) as the name implies, occurs when the vagina literally captures the penis. The anatomical explanation is: during intercourse, an erect penis is filled with blood. In the orgasmic state, women’s pelvic muscles go through spasms. Sometimes, these spasms cause the vaginal walls to clampdown on the penis, making it hard for the man to withdraw. Dr John Dean, a known UK sexual health physician, said that: “When the penis is in the vagina it becomes increasingly engorged. The muscles of the woman’s pelvic floor contract rhythmically at orgasm. While those muscles contract, the penis becomes stuck and further engorged.” However, when the vaginal muscles relax, the blood flows out of the penis and the man can withdraw. It is very common in dogs, but extremely rare in humans. (BBC)

I never knew that there was a biological reason for the magun effect. I discussed the science bit with my friend and she vehemently refuted the explanation. She questioned why known cases all involved cheating situations…a question I couldn’t find answers to. Nonetheless, I found an unverified story about a couple on honeymoon who experienced the same thing. It still didn’t convince her.

Now, My bit…

I believe the science explanation, although begrudgingly, because I just feel that science is rapidly eroding my lifelong beliefs. I believe that penis captivus can happen to anyone. Why is it rife in cheating situations? I think that cheating is exciting for some and have elements of fear. So when penis captivus occurs, the fear leads to further spasms and more painful engorgement of the penis. On the other hand, there is the element of karma!?…I’ll leave that bit for now.

Dr. Dean advised that the best solution in such sticky situations is to relax and don’t panic. Eventually the spasms will stop and a disengagement will occur. If that doesn’t work, call for help and seek medical care.

  1. Are “penis-captivus” and Magun the same? I am of the yoruba lineage of nigeria and instances of magun I ve heard of include the man “crowing like a chicken” or ” somersaulting” or “persistently requesting for water to drink” and I am informed that all such instances result in the death of the
man. Normally if “native help” isnt sought
within a required timeframe. I have
equally been informed of other forms
of magun in the Edo or Delta area of
nigeria where a married woman is
made to take an oath on infidelity
and the consequences for women who were guilty of infidelity They range from not being able to give birth to
the woman going insane or even
    death except she confesses, and
other native stuff done as an
antidote for the effect of the magun
placed or the oath taken. My grudge is this,
why does it ONLY have to be the
woman taking the oath and having the
Magun spell? What about the men?
